Self Care For Trauma Survivors

Predicting when you'll experience a traumatic event is like asking an apple to turn into an orange, it’s impossible. Trauma can happen to anyone and happens completely unexpectedly. Whether you’re currently experiencing trauma or have in the past, here are some ways to recover from it to best take care of yourself:

  • Spend time around trusted friends and family: Sometimes, spending time around loved ones who care for you is the best kind of therapy. Allow yourself to be vulnerable around these trusted people, and vent any recurring emotions you may be feeling to them. They are there to support you through whatever it is that you’re going through so don’t be afraid to use them as an outlet.

  • Avoid using alcohol or drugs: These can have a negative influence on your emotions, behaviors, and overall well being. Using alcohol or drugs as a coping mechanism can open the door to addiction, which isn’t something you want to have on top of experiencing trauma.

  • Stress reducing activities: Stress can be a symptom of trauma. Finding ways to reduce stress can help clear your mind and make you feel at ease. This can include breathing exercises, pilates, and yoga.

  • Maintain proper routines: Having a healthy routine can ensure you are building positive, consistent habits. Going for a walk each morning, afternoon meditation, or even reading a book every night can help sustain a healthy lifestyle.

The most important takeaway from all this is that patience is key. Everyone’s healing process is different, so don’t rush yours. Stay positive, find ways that will best benefit you, and seek help whenever it is necessary.

At the Virginia Women and Family Support Center, we help our residents recover from any trauma they may have experienced by connecting them with therapists from BetterHelp. To help our moms on their journey, consider donating as little as $20 a month to through our cycle breaker program.
