A Home at Last: Maya Brings Her Twin Boys Home

There is no feeling like holding your child for the first time in a safe home. Today, Maya experienced that joy as she brought one of her twin boys home from the hospital into the Haymarket House at Virginia Women and Family Support Center. Her daughter’s excitement holding her baby brother was contagious, and Maya felt a sense of peace she had not felt in months. In just two weeks, Maya's second baby boy will join them, and they will finally be a complete family!

Before coming to the Virginia Women and Family Support Center, Maya’s life was full of uncertainty. She didn’t know where she or her children would sleep, and every day brought new challenges. Facing homelessness while preparing for the arrival of her twins, she often felt overwhelmed and unsure how she would provide for her children. The future seemed impossible to imagine.

When Maya arrived at our Haymarket House, everything changed. She was welcomed with open arms into a safe, supportive environment where she could finally take a deep breath and start to envision a stable future for her family. The Haymarket House, along with our Gainesville home, provides mothers with up to two years of safe housing, giving them the foundation they need to focus on what matters most: their children and their own wellbeing.

At the Virginia Women and Family Support Center, we provide wraparound support designed to help mothers and their children not just survive, but thrive. Moms like Maya receive maternal health coordination including prenatal care, childbirth support, and postpartum care. They have access to therapy, support groups, parenting classes, vocational and educational programs, financial guidance, and life skills workshops. Childcare support and personalized case management allow mothers to focus on bonding with their children while preparing for a future of independence and stability.

Maya’s story is a powerful reminder of why stable housing and comprehensive support make all the difference. For the first time, she could celebrate small victories and look forward to life as a complete family. In her own words, bringing her baby home “is a joy I never thought I would feel, and I finally feel safe for my children.”

Stories like Maya’s are only possible because of the generosity and compassion of our donors and volunteers. Your support helps mothers bring their babies home safely, bond with their children, and have hope for the future.
